Does a Debit Card Build Credit? The Credit Score Mechanics in 2026

No. Debit cards do not build credit.

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion only report credit-account data. Years of responsible debit card usage build zero credit history. Here is the mechanic, and the four paths to build credit if you do not have a card yet.

FICO scoring breakdown

Payment history

35%

On-time vs late payments -- credit accounts only

Amounts owed (utilization)

30%

Credit card balance vs credit limit -- debit has no limit to track

Length of credit history

15%

Age of oldest account, average age -- credit accounts only

New credit

10%

Recent credit inquiries and new accounts

Credit mix

10%

Variety of credit types: cards, auto, mortgage, personal loans

All five FICO factors depend on credit-account data. Debit card usage is invisible to the credit bureaus. You could use a debit card perfectly for 20 years and have a credit score of zero. The bureaus only see what creditors report.

Four paths to build credit without an existing credit card

Secured credit card

You deposit money (typically $200-$500) as collateral; the card issuer gives you a credit card with a matching limit. Purchases and payments are reported to all three bureaus. Graduate to an unsecured card typically within 12-18 months of responsible use.

Capital One Platinum Secured, Discover it Secured, Citi Secured Mastercard

Credit-builder loan

The lender places loan funds into a savings account you cannot access until you pay off the loan. Your payments are reported to bureaus. You get the savings at the end. Builds payment history without a credit card.

Self (Credit Builder Account), Credit Strong, MoneyLion

Rent and utility reporting

Services like Experian Boost, RentReporters, Esusu, and Rental Kharma report your rent and utility payments to one or more bureaus. This adds positive payment history without a credit account. Experian Boost is free and adds to your Experian score immediately.

Authorized user strategy

Become an authorized user on a parent's or spouse's credit card with good history. Their account age and payment history reports to your file. You do not need to use the card at all. This is one of the fastest ways to get an initial credit score.

Any major credit card issuer allows authorized users; most report to all three bureaus

How long does it take to build credit?โ–ผ
You can get an initial FICO score within 6 months of opening your first credit account. To reach a 'good' score (670+ FICO) typically takes 12-24 months of consistent on-time payments and low utilization. To reach 'very good' (740+), typically 3-5 years with no derogatory marks.
Should I get multiple secured cards?โ–ผ
One or two secured cards is usually sufficient. The benefit of a second card is a higher total credit limit (which can lower utilization if you carry any balance) and a second on-time payment account. More than two or three accounts early in credit building adds complexity without proportional benefit.
When can I upgrade from secured to unsecured?โ–ผ
Most issuers review secured card accounts for upgrade eligibility after 12-18 months. Capital One and Discover have formal review programs. You can also apply for an unsecured card from a different issuer once you have 12+ months of payment history and a score above 640-660.
Is there a debit card that reports to credit bureaus?โ–ผ
A few fintechs (Grain, Sable) have offered credit-reporting debit-like products, but these are not standard bank debit cards. In most cases, debit card usage is not reported to credit bureaus. If a card issuer claims their debit card builds credit, read the terms carefully to understand whether the reporting is to all three bureaus and what the mechanism is.
