Wells Fargo provisional credit: when do you get your money back?
"Provisional credit" is a temporary refund while your dispute is investigated. Whether Wells Fargo owes you one, and by when, depends entirely on whether the disputed charge was on a debit card (Regulation E) or a credit card (Regulation Z).
Debit card · Reg E
Within 10 business days
If Wells Fargo cannot finish investigating a debit card dispute within 10 business days, Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.11(c)) requires it to provisionally credit your account within 10 business days and give you full use of the money while it investigates — up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale and foreign transactions. Accounts opened in the last 30 days get 20 business days instead of 10.
Credit card · Reg Z
No fixed deadline
Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13) sets no provisional-credit deadline for credit card disputes. Instead, while Wells Fargo investigates a billing error you filed within 60 days, it cannot make you pay the disputed amount or report it delinquent, and it must resolve the dispute within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days). Any earlier credit is a courtesy, not a legal right.

Notable Policy
Wells Fargo's national bank charter is technically in Sioux Falls, SD, under the same historical precedent as other large card issuers. This means Wells Fargo cardholder agreements generally apply South Dakota law to credit card terms (usury rate), though dispute processes follow federal Reg Z and Reg E regardless of state law.
Charter: OCC (national bank charter) · HQ: South Dakota (card operations), California (operational HQ)
