Truist provisional credit: when do you get your money back?

"Provisional credit" is a temporary refund while your dispute is investigated. Whether Truist owes you one, and by when, depends entirely on whether the disputed charge was on a debit card (Regulation E) or a credit card (Regulation Z).

Debit card · Reg E

Within 10 business days

If Truist cannot finish investigating a debit card dispute within 10 business days, Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.11(c)) requires it to provisionally credit your account within 10 business days and give you full use of the money while it investigates — up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale and foreign transactions. Accounts opened in the last 30 days get 20 business days instead of 10.

Credit card · Reg Z

No fixed deadline

Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13) sets no provisional-credit deadline for credit card disputes. Instead, while Truist investigates a billing error you filed within 60 days, it cannot make you pay the disputed amount or report it delinquent, and it must resolve the dispute within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days). Any earlier credit is a courtesy, not a legal right.

Some legacy SunTrust and BB&T cardholders may have converted products with different terms; verify that your specific card is on the current Truist terms if you have a legacy account.

Phone Number FAQ

Is 1-844-487-8478 a legitimate Truist phone number?
Yes. 1-844-487-8478 is listed by Truist Bank for credit card customer service and disputes (source: truist.com/help/contact-us, checked June 2026). If you receive an unsolicited call claiming to be from this number, hang up and dial it yourself or use the number on the back of your card; caller ID can be spoofed.
What number do I call to dispute a Truist credit card charge?
Call 1-844-487-8478 or use the number on the back of your card. Under Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13), billing-error disputes must be raised within 60 days of the statement date showing the charge. Truist also accepts disputes through online banking.
Does Truist give provisional credit while a dispute is investigated?
It depends on which card. For a Truist debit card dispute, Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.11(c)) requires Truist to provisionally credit your account within 10 business days if it cannot finish investigating in that time, with full use of the funds while the investigation continues (up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale and foreign transactions; 20 business days for accounts opened in the last 30 days). For a Truist credit card dispute, Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13) sets no provisional-credit deadline; instead, you are not required to pay the disputed amount and it cannot be reported delinquent until the dispute is resolved, within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days).
