Citi provisional credit: when do you get your money back?

"Provisional credit" is a temporary refund while your dispute is investigated. Whether Citi owes you one, and by when, depends entirely on whether the disputed charge was on a debit card (Regulation E) or a credit card (Regulation Z).

Debit card · Reg E

Within 10 business days

If Citi cannot finish investigating a debit card dispute within 10 business days, Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.11(c)) requires it to provisionally credit your account within 10 business days and give you full use of the money while it investigates — up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale and foreign transactions. Accounts opened in the last 30 days get 20 business days instead of 10.

Credit card · Reg Z

No fixed deadline

Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13) sets no provisional-credit deadline for credit card disputes. Instead, while Citi investigates a billing error you filed within 60 days, it cannot make you pay the disputed amount or report it delinquent, and it must resolve the dispute within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days). Any earlier credit is a courtesy, not a legal right.

Yes. 1-800-950-5114 is listed by Citibank for credit card customer service and disputes (source: citibank.com/credit-card/customer-service.do, checked June 2026). If you receive an unsolicited call claiming to be from this number, hang up and dial it yourself or use the number on the back of your card; caller ID can be spoofed.

Does Citi give provisional credit while a dispute is investigated?
It depends on which card. For a Citi debit card dispute, Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.11(c)) requires Citi to provisionally credit your account within 10 business days if it cannot finish investigating in that time, with full use of the funds while the investigation continues (up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale and foreign transactions; 20 business days for accounts opened in the last 30 days). For a Citi credit card dispute, Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13) sets no provisional-credit deadline; instead, you are not required to pay the disputed amount and it cannot be reported delinquent until the dispute is resolved, within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days).
