The regulatory dispute windows explained
Credit Card (Reg Z)
- 60 days from statement date to submit billing-error notice
- 30 days for issuer to acknowledge
- 2 billing cycles / 90 days max for resolution
- No payment required on disputed amount during investigation
- Authority: 12 CFR 1026.13(b)(1)
Debit Card (Reg E)
- 2 business days from learning of loss: $50 max
- 2-60 days from statement: $500 max
- After 60 days: unlimited liability
- 10 business days for bank to investigate
- Authority: 12 CFR 1005.6(b)
