Capital One provisional credit: when do you get your money back?
"Provisional credit" is a temporary refund while your dispute is investigated. Whether Capital One owes you one, and by when, depends entirely on whether the disputed charge was on a debit card (Regulation E) or a credit card (Regulation Z).
Debit card · Reg E
Within 10 business days
If Capital One cannot finish investigating a debit card dispute within 10 business days, Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.11(c)) requires it to provisionally credit your account within 10 business days and give you full use of the money while it investigates — up to 45 days, or 90 days for point-of-sale and foreign transactions. Accounts opened in the last 30 days get 20 business days instead of 10.
Credit card · Reg Z
No fixed deadline
Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.13) sets no provisional-credit deadline for credit card disputes. Instead, while Capital One investigates a billing error you filed within 60 days, it cannot make you pay the disputed amount or report it delinquent, and it must resolve the dispute within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days). Any earlier credit is a courtesy, not a legal right.

Capital One's Eno feature provides virtual card numbers for online credit card purchases, creating a unique number per merchant that prevents the real card number from being exposed. This significantly reduces fraud risk on credit cards for online subscriptions. No equivalent virtual number service for Capital One debit cards as of June 2026. Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover Financial Services on 18 May 2025; Discover Bank merged into Capital One, National Association, though Discover-branded cards continue to operate on the Discover network.
